Blue Knights Volleyball Announces the Signing of Sonja Pierce

The Blue Knights volleyball team has signed outside hitter, Sonja Pierce, from Edison High School. Sonja is a 4 time Varsity letter winner and was awarded All State her senior year, as well as Edison MVP.

"I am thrilled that Sonja is going to be a part of program. She is dynamic, eager to improve, and a fantastic teammate. She is an outstanding person and someone that will have a big impact on our program. I can't wait to see what she achieves in the next two years," said head coach Jen Bowman.

We asked Sonja a few questions to get to know her better.

Tell us a little about yourself and about your volleyball history up to this point:

I began playing volleyball in elementary school for a park board in North East Minneapolis. I really enjoyed playing with my friends and dad (who is an enthusiast). I continued playing and joined my middle school team and played 6-8th grade. My freshman year at Edison High School I originally made JV, but I moved up to varsity for the first match of the season. That winter was my first year playing club, for Minneapolis Vibe. I played varsity and club my sophomore and junior year, too for Edison and Vibe. I didn't know until the end of my Junior year that I wanted to continue playing in college. I never really took it too seriously until then. My senior year was a tough one, we didn't have the seniors from the year before, and we lost our best setter. I continued to work hard, and this winter season, I made it onto Northern Impact 18-1s !

List the years and names of volleyball teams you've played for:

Middle school: Marcy Open School, SE MPLS. 6th, 7th, 8th

Middle school parkboard: Van Cleve and Bottineau Park.

High school: Edison varsity. 9-12th grade.

Club: Minneapolis VIBE. 9-11th grade. Northern Impact. 12th grade.

Have you receive any awards in volleyball?

Most years in volleyball the setter usually gets the MVP award, but my senior year, we had just lost our setter and we didn't have a ton of really solid players, so I was awarded Most Valuable Player.

This last high school season I also achieved an All State award.

Have you played any other sports?

Yes ! I play softball in the spring. I've played softball since 6th grade at my middle school, Marcy. This year (2019) will be my first year not playing softball, and instead helping coach the team.

What other interests/hobbies or activities do you participate in?

I am the leader of the Edison Outdoor Club, We go on day trips and fun outdoors activities, and even trips in the summer to places like Yellowstone National Park, WY and the Beartooth Mountains, MT. Being part of this club has been influential.I enjoy traveling and rock climbing with my friends, too! I am part of a group at school called Academic World Quest, which is a current events and world competition. We compete once a year and I have been involved in this since freshman year.

Why did you choose DCTC and what you are excited about in the coming 2 years?

I chose DCTC because of the thought of community. I first learned about the school through the volleyball coach reaching out to me during my high school volleyball season. I hadn't considered going to a 2 year school before that. I'm so glad I was introduced to her and this program. I've chosen to become a part of the volleyball team in hopes to continue playing and improving my skills and to continue my education and go into nursing. I am looking forward to being a part of this school for the next 2 years.

Welcome to the Blue Knights Family, Sonja!
