Blue Knights Volleyball Starts Season 2-1

The Blue Knight Volleyball team had a great start to the 2019 season going 2-1 on the road.  

The Knights won their season opener on the road at Ellsworth CC in 3 straight sets (25-15, 25-11, 25-16).  The Knights hit .314 as a team, had 72 digs, and 6 blocks.  They were led by freshman Isabel Speakman who had 12 kills and hit .346.  Sophomore Mackenna Johnson had a double-double with 11 kills, 18 digs, and 3 aces.  Freshman Brooke Bosworth added 8 kills, hit .583, and added 2 blocks.  Sophomore Abigail Shaffer led the team defensively with 21 digs.  Sophomore setter Anika Weber had 45 assists.  

On Friday, the Blue Knights traveled to Iowa Central CC where they faced off against Briar Cliff University JV (NAIA) and Iowa Central CC.  

The Knights won their first match against Briar Cliff in 4 sets (25-22, 22-25, 29-27, 25-14).  The Knights battled in the first 3 sets and took control in the 4th.  DCTC had a balanced offense with 3 players recording double digit kills.  Mackenna Johnson posted another double-double and led the team with 20 kills and 25 digs.  Freshman Sonja Piece added 19 kills, hit .326, and also had 2 aces.  Isabel Speakman also had a double-double with 16 kills and 22 digs.  Anika Weber had 64 assists, 5 kills, and 2 aces.  Abigail Schaffer added 24 digs and 2 aces.  

In the second match, Iowa Central proved to be too much for the Blue Knights.  DCTC lost in 3 sets, but battled in the first and third (18-25, 14-25, 20-25).  Mackenna Johnson led the effort with 8 kills, while Sonja Pierece and Isabel Speakman added 7 kills.  Abigail Schaffer added 20 digs.  

The Knights have their first home match Wednesday, September 4th at 7:00pm against region opponent North Dakota State College of Science.  The match will be played at Inver Hills Community College.
